Music analysis: Jhené Aiko denies new song is about Big Sean amid fan speculation
Jhené Aiko has shut down rumours that a song on her new album takes aim at ex partner Big Sean, after fans online connected the lyrics to their decade long relationship.
Aiko released her fourth studio album, “Westside Whimsy”, on Friday, September 11, through Def Jam Recordings.
It is her first full length project in six years, following 2020’s “Chilombo”, writes Music News Blitz’s Likhanye Lolo.
The 20 track album features Kendrick Lamar, marking a reunion between the two artists after more than a decade, alongside Ab Soul, Larry June, Tyga and OHMA.
Lyrics spark speculation
Fans quickly zeroed in on two tracks, “Ceiling (Freestyle)” and “He Belongs”, picking apart the lyrics for references to her past relationship with Big Sean.
On “He Belongs”, Aiko sings, “Can’t turn a fling into a real thing, can’t turn a promise into a wedding ring, can’t turn a hoe into a husband”.
On “Ceiling”, she sings, “Who the f*** is Lisa? Who the f*** is Paige? Who the f*** is Britney? Get the f*** up out my face”.
The lines spread quickly on social media, with listeners linking the lyrics to Aiko and Big Sean’s on and off relationship, which included their creative duo TWENTY88 and their son, Noah, born in 2022.
The pair split in 2025.

Aiko responds
Responding directly to a fan post on Threads, Aiko offered a brief clarification: “Song is not about him.”
She did not elaborate further or name who, if anyone, inspired the lyrics.
A personal chapter
Aiko has described “Westside Whimsy” as a love letter to her hometown of Los Angeles.
She has also spoken about 2025 being a difficult year for her, following reports that she lost her Los Angeles home in the January 2025 wildfires while working on the album.
Whatever inspired the lyrics, “Westside Whimsy” marks Aiko’s first full length project in six years, giving fans plenty of new material to analyse as they look for clues about the experiences behind the music.
