Music analysis: Taylor Swift explains the double meaning behind ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’
Taylor Swift has opened up about the meaning behind “I Knew It, I Knew You”, revealing how the Toy Story 5 track tells two stories at once.
The nostalgic country song was written from the perspective of Jessie, the beloved cowgirl from the Pixar franchise.
However, its lyrics are also intended to remind listeners of childhood friendships, young love and the people who can still feel familiar after years apart, writes Music News Blitz’s Anna Ferraz.
What is ‘I Knew It, I Knew You’ about?
Speaking in an audio message played on Y’all Access With Kelly Sutton, Swift explained that she and co-writer Jack Antonoff tried to imagine the world through the eyes of a toy.
That perspective shaped the song’s opening image, which places Jessie among the grass during a childhood summer.
“They can only see up to the height of blades of grass,” Swift said, explaining how even a simple outdoor scene would look completely different to a toy.
The image also has a more human meaning. Blurred summer days, running barefoot and growing up all add to the feeling of looking back at a time that can never be fully recovered.
One of the track’s most memorable lyrics describes toys as “parachutes for the free fall of being younger”.
It captures the comfort children find in their favourite toys, while also reflecting how frightening and exciting childhood can be.

Swift and Jack Antonoff channelled Randy Newman
Swift wrote and produced “I Knew It, I Knew You” with Antonoff after seeing an early version of Toy Story 5.
The pair knew they were stepping into a musical world shaped by Randy Newman, whose songs have been part of the franchise since the first Toy Story film arrived in 1995.
During American Country Countdown with Ryan Fox, Swift said they approached the song by asking one important question: “What would Randy do?”
Rather than simply copying Newman’s sound, Swift and Antonoff drew inspiration from his unusual chord progressions and his ability to write songs that work for children while carrying much deeper emotions for adults.
Swift later joined Newman at the Los Angeles premiere of Toy Story 5, where they performed “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” together.

Released on 5 June 2026, “I Knew It, I Knew You” also brought Swift back to the country sound that first launched her career.
The song reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Songs chart, while climbing to No. 8 on Country Airplay.
Its success shows why the track works beyond the film.
For younger listeners, it is a song about Jessie and the toys they have grown up watching.
For adults, it is about unexpectedly reconnecting with someone who once meant everything to them.
That double meaning gives “I Knew It, I Knew You” its emotional pull.
It may have been written for Toy Story 5, but the memories at the centre of it belong to almost everyone.
