Music analysis: The who’s who of Madonna’s new music video
Madonna’s recently released ‘Confessions II - The Film’ is a 10-minute long feast of stilettos, lasers, and a medley of songs from ‘CONFESSIONS II’, set for release on July 3.
Following on from 2005’s ‘Confessions On A Dancefloor’, the album will be dance and house heavy, boasting new singles ‘I Feel So Free’, and ‘Bring Your Love’ featuring Sabrina Carpenter.
Speaking of Sabrina, the elephant in the room is, of course, the star-studded list of cameos in the video, writes Music News Blitz’s Megan Hamilton.
Who features?
Julia Garner, of ‘Ozark’ and ‘The Fantastic Four’ fame, appears on a dancefloor with a platinum pixie and bright red lipstick, a direct reference to Madonna’s 80s look.
Sabrina Carpenter is then seen crawling on the floor, in a manner very reminiscent of Dirty Dancing, but with the strobe lighting and matching blonde hair, you’re never quite sure whether you’re looking at Madonna or Sabrina.
The confusion continues as Madonna struts down a hallway and enters a bathroom, but as she turns to the mirror, it’s Kate Moss looking back at us, applying lipstick.
The whole video feels like a fever dream soundtracked by thumping basslines, especially as a suited-and-booted Benedict Cumberbatch stumbles in, looking the picture of “I’m not meant to be here, but I’m loving it”.
The video also makes references to her other work, including a frame harking back to the music video for Madonna’s Bond theme ‘Die Another Day’, as well as her starring role in ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ from 1985.
Other celebrities appearing in the music video are:
Arca
Archie Madekwe
Cole Palmer
Debbie Maxar
Feid
Gwendoline Christie
Honey Dijon
Joao Pedro
Odessa A’Zion
Richard E. Grant
Shygirl
Lourdes Leon

Madonna’s career
While the 67-year-old has been putting out anniversary editions and remixes, the last time the queen of pop released a new album was 2019’s ‘Madame X’, making it the longest gap between album releases, and ‘CONFESSIONS II’ all the more exciting for fans.
There have been rumblings online that Madonna is no longer relevant, which is blasphemous in my opinion, but for all the non-believers, this video likely changed some minds.
Additionally, her mega hit ‘Into the Groove’ recently re-entered the UK charts 30 years after its release, proving that, yes, Madonna’s still got it.
