Taylor Swift's 2026 AMA results spark debate among fans

Taylor Swift has been recognised for dominating the music charts globally, but for the past two years, Swift has not made her debut at any of the hosted American Music Awards ceremonies (AMAs).

The 2026 AMAs were held on the 25th May in Las Vegas, where Taylor led with eight nominations, but despite this, she failed to scoop even a single award.

Taylor’s large fan supporters, known as “Swifties,” were looking forward to seeing her at the show, but instead, the award was met with emerging stars and a shift in fan preferences, writes Music News Blitz’s Tabitha Kongo.

Leading the pack, but missing the prize

Swift was set up for a massive night at the AMAs after securing eight major nominations for ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, including Artist of the Year and Album of the Year.

Yet, when the winners were announced she walked away with nothing.

Given her strong track record in fan-voted categories, many fans and industry observers expected Swift to perform well at this year's awards.

Throughout her career, she has won 40 American Music Awards.

However, for the second consecutive year, Swift did not take home some of the night's major awards.

The results sparked discussion across social media, with reactions ranging from surprise and disappointment to support for the winners.

Swift's absence from the ceremony also prompted speculation among some fans about how she chose to spend the evening, with some suggesting she may have opted to spend time with her fiancé, Travis Kelce.

New faces take the centre

K-pop powerhouse BTS was the highlight of the night.

They took home the title of Artist of the Year award while also winning Best Male K-Pop Artist and Song of the Summer.

Their victories show the group's continuous work and global influence following their return.

Sabrina Carpenter, with seven nominations, walked away with her first AMA trophy.

She won three major categories for ‘Man’s Best Friend’, including Album of the Year, Best Female Pop artist and Best Pop album.

The achievement marks a significant milestone in her career, earning recognition in categories that also featured artists such as Swift.

Girl group, KATSEYE, also managed to take over Swift by winning New Artist of the Year, Breakthrough Pop Artist and Best Music Video for ‘Gnarly’.

The result highlights the growing success of a relatively new girl group, which secured the award in a category that also included Swift, a long-established artist.

Critics and controversy

Much of the criticism and controversy stemmed from the fact that the AMAs are fan-voted, which led commentators and fans to question how an artist with such strong media visibility and nomination dominance could end the night empty-handed.

Some viewed the result as a surprising “snub,” while others argued that BTS has made a big impact on music, culture and millions of people worldwide.

Some comments from fans feel that, despite the show being fan-voted, the 2026 AMA votes were biased:

“no hate to bts but… bts over taylor????? swim was NOT even viral among general public” said a fellow viewer as reported in a Deccan Herald article.
