X Factor star Chico defends Simon Cowell amid contestant criticism
As conversations continue about how reality TV shows supported contestants behind the scenes, former X Factor favourite Chico Slimani is offering a contrasting view - praising Simon Cowell and describing the famously tough judge as “a pussycat” away from the cameras.
Two decades after scoring a No. 1 hit with ‘It’s Chico Time’, Chico spoke to new online bingo brand Zingo Bingo to reflect on his experience and respond to recent criticism from former contestants aimed at the show’s creator.
“I can only speak for myself, but to be honest, some of these comments from some of the people that were on the show – who did well out of it – it has left me scratching my head,” he said.
“I don’t get it.”

“Nobody was forced to go on the show”
Chico emphasised that contestants made their own choice to take part and that outcomes naturally differed.
“Nobody was forced to go on the show” he said.
“For some, it worked out great. For some, it didn’t work out great. I can only speak for myself. For me, it worked out great.”
He added that, in his experience, Cowell treated him with respect and gave artists an opportunity to build careers.
“He gave us a platform. What we chose to do with that platform was always up to us. It’s a show. It’s nothing personal. It’s the music business.”

Simon Cowell “playing a role”
Addressing Cowell’s reputation for harsh critiques, Chico suggested the persona viewers saw was largely part of the show’s entertainment value.
“Despite what he said or how he acted in front of the cameras, he absolutely loved me. He couldn’t have been nicer or more professional,” he explained.
He added that Cowell often played a “pantomime villain" to create drama for audiences.
A “life-changing” experience
Looking back, Chico described his X Factor journey as transformative, opening the door to touring opportunities, television appearances, music releases, and charitable work.
“X Factor was the best experience ever for me”, adding, “I would do it all again in a heartbeat.”
