Album review: Zara Larsson releases all-female remix album Midnight Sun: Girls Trip
On May 1, Zara Larsson released a reimagined version of her 2025 album, Midnight Sun called Midnight Sun: Girls Trip, through her label, Sommer House and Epic Records.
Midnight Sun: Girls Trip is a revisited version of the 2025 album with each song including at least one female featuring artist.
The album is split into two discs with Disc 1 being the remixed versions of the original songs on the album and Disc 2 consisting of the untouched songs on the Midnight Sun album.
Music News Blitz’s Darshan Kaur Gill reviews the new album.
Girls Trip
The album opens with a remixed Midnight Sun, reuniting Larsson with UK artist Pink Pantheress, creating more of a garage and dance hybrid compared to the original song.
Blue Moon is next up and Larsson seemed to really lean into featuring artist Kehlani’s R&B speciality, allowing Kehlani space on the track to really shine and highlighting Larsson’s versatility beyond the pop genre.
Pretty Ugly features JT and Margo XS, with JT hopping on vocals and Margo XS on production.
This version seems to further emphasise the message of the track; the beat and JT’s feature truly capturing the energy of the song, improving on what the original track had already laid out.
This Girls Trip version of Girl’s Girl changes the premise entirely, with the song focusing on the struggles of women in the industry and how hard it is to be a ‘girl’s girl’ in an industry where women are always pitted against one another.
The track seems to highlight how Larsson is trying to break the stereotype that women always need to be polite and patiently wait their turn for their time at the top and with Emilia’s feature.
She expresses the exact same frustrations, taking the song that was previously about a shallower topic – like wanting your best friend’s boyfriend – and subverting it into a song that contains deeper meaning.
Crush features transgender artist Eli, and similar to the original track, focuses on a love story that was never realised.
The production on Eurosummer featuring Shakira elevates the track compared to the original, and fits Shakira’s style really well whilst also allowing Larsson's sound to still shine through.
Hot & Sexy featuring Tyla stays true to the original, not really changing much to the song, until Tyla’s verse comes in, and it definitely falls short of the original due to the changes.
The Ambition featuring Madison Beer and BAMBII was vocally one of the best songs on the album with Beer and Larsson’s voices harmonising together perfectly.
The second featuring artist, BAMBII, cannot be heard singing on the track but is listed as part of the production of the song with songwriting credits.
The song seems to be the album’s emotional centrepiece with Zara and Madison singing about how they still want recognition for their talents.
Saturn’s Return featured Malibu and Helena Gao, who both have songwriting credits on the song and with Gao’s vocals, the song sounds slightly angelic. However, an argument can be made that the song went on too long.
Puss Puss, similarly to the Blue Moon remix, allows featuring artist Robyn’s signature sound to take over the song with Larsson’s sound giving over almost entirely. However unlike the Blue Moon remix, this doesn’t seem to have the same effect and makes the track seem out of place on the album.
Midnight Sun: Girls Trip commits to the idea of the remix album that it set out to be.
Each track on the album was changed in one way or another, whether it be lyrically, or the production of the song, and most still kept the feel of a Zara Larsson project.
This remix album shows that Larsson is capable of more than just the box she was sequestered into.
