Music analysis: Ella Langley is having country music's biggest year
A journey that started in a pasture full of cows has taken the Alabama songwriter to the top of the Billboard charts, writes Music News Blitz’s Zinhle Radebe.
After walking away from university to pursue music in Nashville, Ella Langley has emerged as country music's breakout star of 2026.
Her story begins in Hope Hull, a small rural community outside Montgomery, Alabama, where she spent much of her childhood as a competitive dancer.
By the time she enrolled at Auburn University to study forestry, she was already spending her nights playing four-hour bar gigs across Alabama. Music soon became more than a weekend pursuit.
At 20, Langley left university behind and headed to Nashville with little more than a guitar.
When Nashville finally listened
Every country artist waits for the song that changes everything.
For Langley, it was “Choosin' Texas”.
Released in late 2025, the heartbreak anthem quickly became one of country music's biggest crossover hits.
Co-written with Miranda Lambert, Luke Dick and Joybeth Taylor, it topped Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart before crossing over to the Billboard Hot 100.
Langley believes the song connected because it came from an honest place.
"We love this song," she told Billboard.
"I don't know if it's because it's a very honest point of view. I tried to add some groove into this record, big singing choruses and big melodic guitar licks that you can remember."
She later reflected on its impact with Country Now.
"It shows you the power of what a song can do. Every song matters."
Rewriting the record books
“Choosin' Texas” has done far more than launch Langley's career.
The single surpassed Taylor Swift's record for the longest-running No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 by a female artist whose song also topped the country charts.
It also became the first song by a female artist to top the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts simultaneously.
According to Rolling Stone, “Choosin' Texas” is now on course to spend 14 weeks at No. 1.
That would place Langley alongside Whitney Houston's “I Will Always Love You” and Mariah Carey's “We Belong Together” among the longest-running No. 1 songs by a female artist in Billboard history.
The song's reach didn't stop with country radio.
After the United States men's national team defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina at the FIFA World Cup, players celebrated on the team bus by singing “Choosin' Texas”.
It was another sign that the song had become part of popular culture.

Proving she belonged
After the success of “Choosin' Texas”, attention quickly turned to what Langley would do next. Her answer was “Dandelion”.
Released in April, the album confirmed she was far more than the artist behind one record-breaking hit.
Executive produced alongside Miranda Lambert and Ben West, “Dandelion” trades the heartbreak of “hungover” for open roads, brighter days and a songwriter who sounds more settled in herself.
"This record is flirty. It's fun," Langley said during the album's launch.
"I wanted something like you're on a boat, you're in a car, driving somewhere beautiful."
Langley has described “hungover” as the soundtrack to her life between 18 and 25.
“Dandelion” became the next chapter.
Inspired by the detoxifying qualities of dandelion tea, the title became a metaphor for leaving old versions of herself behind.
Why 2026 belongs to Ella Langley
Few artists have dominated 2026 the way Langley has.
“Dandelion” topped the charts, her monthly Spotify audience climbed beyond 30 million listeners, and Billboard Women in Music honoured her with its Powerhouse Award.
Away from the spotlight, Langley has also become more open about her faith.
In an Instagram post, she revealed that her relationship with God had "changed drastically" over the past year.
"I started to have faith," she wrote.
"I started to view the days we have been given as a gift instead of a chore."
She later thanked Jesus "for giving me a way to spend eternity" with Him.
Few rising stars are willing to risk their "cool factor" by talking so boldly about eternity and their relationship with God.
This level of raw honesty and spiritual grit may be exactly what is turning casual listeners into lifelong fans.
Chart records may have introduced Ella Langley to the world, but it may be her quiet conviction that keeps people listening long after 2026 is over.
