Music opinion: How Tame Impala has influenced an entirely new genre of music
Unlike typical artists who rely on melodies and instruments to define their sound, Tame Impala’s signature sound is created solely through production.
With lyrics more as the accompaniment of the rhythm, the layers and psychedelic waves come together to create a distinctive and unconventional sound that has become the soundtrack for 2026.
Since the release of ‘DRACULA’ in September 2025, the track has surpassed over 430 million listens on Spotify, and quickly gained traction on TikTok after a remix went viral, recognising its status as one of Tame Impala’s most successful hits.
As a result, their Deadbeat Tour, which is set to run until October 2026, has been marked as one of their most extensive tours to date, including 79 shows and sold-out tickets across Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and London in the UK.
So, how has this unique blend become so popular amongst Gen Z audiences? Music News Blitz’s Emma Corrigan explores.
The evolution of a sound that defined a generation
With Tame Impala actually releasing their first album in 2007, the band’s lead performer and producer, Kevin Parker, has evolved the music project since the initial debut.
In the early years, the project relied heavily on guitar and instrumental rhythms before transitioning to synthesiser-driven sounds, shifting to a polished production style that has brought in collaborations from other artists.
Over the years, this has included award-winning singer-songwriter Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga and The Weeknd, for whom Parker has embedded his production techniques for upcoming songs.
For Gen Z, the interest is largely driven by the way Tame Impala’s music fits into modern streaming and social media culture.
Songs like ‘The Less I Know the Better’ have found a renewed popularity across TikTok, introducing the project to younger audiences years after its original release.
Their blend of psychedelic textures and pop-infused production has also become the universal mood-based listening.
Whether it’s needed to lock in for a study session, or for a rave, the euphoric melodies capture a mix of both a nostalgic and contemporary atmosphere.

A new genre?
Whilst the popularity of Tame Impala can be gathered from the amalgamations of genre, Kevin Parker's individual production and experimentation of sound can be associated with an unspecified musical identity.
As the project has become more popular globally, this has led to its sound being increasingly recognised as a distinctive and almost genre-defining style in its own right, ultimately leading to a new direction in the music era.
