Taylor Swift honours Dolly Parton during record-breaking night at MTV VMAs
Taylor Swift’s historic night at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards became one of the ceremony’s most emotional moments as she dedicated its biggest prize to the late Dolly Parton.
The singer collected Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia, Best Direction for Opalite and the inaugural Artist Director Honors award.
Those victories brought Swift’s career total to 33 VMAs, taking her beyond Beyoncé and making her the most-awarded artist in the ceremony’s history.
Held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, 27 September, the ceremony was hosted by Snoop Dogg and featured performances from Madonna, Sabrina Carpenter, Lisa, RAYE and other leading artists, writes Music News Blitz’s Anna Ferraz.
Taylor Swift dedicates Video of the Year to Dolly Parton
Swift received the night’s biggest competitive prize for her self-directed The Fate of Ophelia music video.
After thanking fans for voting and acknowledging her creative team, Swift dedicated the award to Parton, describing the country music legend as “the ultimate showgirl”.
She praised Parton’s vivid songwriting and ability to turn every experience into love, gratitude and appreciation for her audience.
Swift concluded her tribute by saying: “We were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time.”
Parton died in August at the age of 80 following a battle with cancer.
The VMAs also honoured her legacy through a performance from Kacey Musgraves, who delivered a moving rendition of Parton’s classic I Will Always Love You.
Historic Artist Director honour recognises Swift’s visual storytelling
Earlier in the evening, Swift became the first recipient of the VMAs’ Artist Director Honors award, created to celebrate musicians whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos.
The achievement recognised Swift’s development as a filmmaker and her growing involvement in directing her own visuals.
She made her solo directorial debut with The Man in 2020 and has since directed projects including All Too Well: The Short Film, Anti-Hero, Fortnight, The Fate of Ophelia and Opalite.
While accepting the honour, Swift thanked the people who have worked alongside her and credited her fans with making the creative process so rewarding.

Patient Zero video premieres during the VMAs
Swift also used the ceremony to premiere the music video for Patient Zero, another track from the expanded edition of The Life of a Showgirl.
The cinematic video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, with Swift once again taking the director’s chair.
Her three awards recognised both sides of her creative career: the artist in front of the camera and the filmmaker shaping the story behind it.
However, it was Swift’s tribute to one of country music’s greatest storytellers that gave her record-breaking evening its most memorable and heartfelt moment.
