WATCH: FORRM’s Firouz FarmanFarmaian talks ‘digital tyranny’, artistic freedom and the cinematic vision behind BOUTIQUE album
Music News Blitz’s brand-new podcast segment ‘Artist Spotlight’ launched on May 12 with an in-depth conversation between Anna Ferraz, Will Gardner and Firouz FarmanFarmaian - the leading creative force behind psychedelic art-rock collective FORRM.
Who is Firouz FarmanFarmaian?
FarmanFarmaian’s creative journey has moved between music, film and contemporary art.
Before FORRM, he fronted the French band Playground throughout the 2000s until 2012, eventually stepping away from the music industry due to growing frustration with the rise of download culture and the influence of major record labels.
Following this, he focused exclusively on contemporary art, producing large-scale installations and multimedia projects.
However, music gradually found its way back into his work through filmmaking and sound design.
How did FORRM evolve?
Discussing the beginnings of the project, FarmanFarmaian explains that FORRM evolved naturally from his contemporary art practice, particularly through his work creating soundscapes for the Kyrgyzstan pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale.
Rather than viewing FORRM as a fixed band, he describes it as an “open-ended” collective, comparing the creative process to a pirate ship where collaborators join depending on the artistic mission at hand.
"I thought that I would build FORRM like an open-ended musical post-rock ensemble where... whoever was there at a given time in space and project-wise would join the project and develop, like working on a pirate ship. You just hop in, you hop out".
BOUTIQUE
That fluid and nomadic approach extends into BOUTIQUE, which FarmanFarmaian says was conceived less as a conventional album and more as a cinematic and immersive art piece.
Recorded between Morocco, Spain, New York and the South of France, the project blends distorted guitars, psychedelic textures, ambient experimentation and analogue recording techniques to create what he describes as a more tactile listening experience.
JUNKIE WAYZ
The interview also explores FORRM’s latest single “JUNKIE WAYZ,” which acts as the first glimpse into the sonic world of BOUTIQUE.
While the currently available release is a shorter radio edit, FarmanFarmaian reveals that the full album will feature longer and more experimental compositions, leaning further into atmosphere and storytelling.
Modern-day artist limitations
One of the most striking moments in the discussion comes when FarmanFarmaian criticises what he calls the “digital tyranny” of modern streaming culture.
He speaks candidly about the limitations artists face within platforms like Spotify and explains why FORRM has intentionally embraced limited cassette and vinyl releases instead of focusing on streaming metrics.
Rather than chasing algorithms, FarmanFarmaian says he is more interested in building a smaller but deeply connected audience around physical art and live experiences.
He also discusses the importance of maintaining artistic independence and resisting pressure to create music designed purely for online consumption.
"I call it digital tyranny," he said, adding that "for many musicians, the more they play and the more they do... the poorer they get".
Inspirations
Elsewhere in the conversation, FarmanFarmaian reflects on the creative figures who have shaped his artistic philosophy.
He highlights the influence of Beat Generation writers such as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, while also praising artists like Bob Dylan and Miles Davis for their cultural impact and approach to performance.
He additionally points to modern touring band Goose as an example of artists successfully cultivating dedicated live audiences outside mainstream structures.
"I'm not an activist... I prefer using the word... activator."
The interview closes with FarmanFarmaian describing himself not as an activist, but as an “activator” - someone interested in bridging cultural spaces through music, film and visual art.
With ‘JUNKIE WAYZ’ now released and the full BOUTIQUE album set to arrive later this year, the conversation offers a fascinating insight into one of alternative music’s most ambitious and unconventional emerging projects.
