20 years on: How Taylor Swift transformed the music industry

In 2006, 16-year-old Taylor Swift stepped into the music industry; two decades later, her influence is impossible to ignore.

Music News Blitz writer Abbie Latymer calls her “an authentic voice who transforms personal insecurities and experiences into uplifting and inspiring music”.

What has she achieved?

It’s impossible to tell when the young singer-songwriter's love for music began.

One memory that stood out was a LeAnn Rimes Concert she saw when she was six years old.

Now, her love for music has grown into 217 awards, 300 nominations and over 700 concerts worldwide.

Her Eras Tour was even titled “the biggest concert of all time”.

Her Journey

Before global fame, young Taylor Swift performed anywhere she could: local festivals, small-town stages and even an appearance at the 2002 Philadelphia 76ers game to sing the national anthem.

It was 2006 when she was recognised globally for her first album ‘Taylor Swift’, which she had come up with during a maths lesson in Freshman year of high school.

What followed was a list of albums and eras that have shaped a new generation of music.

Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), 1989 (2014), Reputation (2017), Lover (2019), Folklore (2020), Evermore (2020), Midnights (2022), The Tortured Poets Department (2024) and The Life of a Showgirl (2025).

Swift also re-recorded four albums to regain ownership; dubbing them ‘Taylor’s versions’.

Swift’s music represents her journey

Each of Swift’s eras reflects a different chapter of her life.

We saw her transform from a girl with a guitar to a woman navigating fame, scrutiny, heartbreaks, reinvention and resilience.

In her 2020 Netflix documentary, Miss Americana, she revealed the emotional toll of the #TaylorSwiftIsOverParty trend, which reached number 1 on Twitter in 2016.

The trend caused her to step back from the limelight until August 2017, when she launched her confident, defiant ‘Reputation’ era.

Creating a community

Despite the personal nature of her writing, her songs resonate universally.

Fans can relate to the frustrating heartache of failed relationships, chaotic self-discovery and the painful yet common belief that no one likes you.

Her music helps her listeners heal and feel heard.

Protecting artists and fans

Taylor Swift is a woman of no nonsense.

Her career journey coincided with the emergence of technology, streaming services and the rise of Ticketmaster, which all threatened the rights of artists and fans.

The young artist took it in her stride to pull her music from streaming services, such as Spotify and Apple Music, in protest against ‘freemium’ models that gave artists low royalty payouts.

Former Senior VP of Apple, Eddy Cue, changed Apple’s decisions on the back of her words to ensure that artists were paid royalties.

As well as protecting artists’ rights, Swift worked with Ticketmaster to create SwiftTix, a verified fan program to secure advance registration.

The model aimed to combat bots, scalpers and technical issues that are prolific on Ticketmaster.

Artists who caught the Swift Fever

With tens of millions fans worldwide, it’s not a surprise that many contemporary singers and songwriters have been influenced by Swift.

Sabrina Carpenter, who was ranked as part of the top five greatest artists of 2025, was a huge fan of Taylor Swift.

Her first music video was a cover of Swift’s ‘Picture to Burn’.

The stars had their first conversation with each other in 2017 and have now developed a sister-like relationship with one another.

Carpenter described working with Taylor Swift through the Eras tour “a childhood dream come true”.

Other Swift-inspired artists include Olivia Rodrigo, Conan Gray, Gracie Abrams, Tate McRae, Bella Kaye, Camila Cabello and many others.

What is she doing now?

This June, Taylor Swift will become the youngest female to be inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, a prestigious award that honours and preserves the legacies of the most respected songwriters.

The event will take place at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City on the 11th June 2026.

Alongside this achievement, Taylor Swift is set to get married!

The grown up ‘girl with a guitar’ will be marrying American football player Travis Kelce on the 3rd July.

While Swift has not officially stated she is working on a new album, it has been strongly hinted that new music is in the works.
