Music analysis: The evolution of independent artists in the music industry

The music industry has changed significantly over the years, shifting more power toward artists who manage their careers independently, writes Music News Blitz’s Tabitha Kongo.

While securing a major record label was previously the ultimate goal for musicians, many artists today achieve career success through independent management.

An increase in digital platforms has given artists control over how they create, distribute and promote their music.

Independent artists have full control over their music, image and production, attaining freedom from commercial pressure that is often associated with major record labels.

Artists also have enough financial independence.

Musicians like Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift and Chance the Rapper are prime examples of this industry shift.

Their career trajectories couldn’t be more different, but their journey has changed the narrative about who controls an artist’s career breakthrough.

Frank Ocean

Initially signed with Def Jam, Frank Ocean is an artist who has achieved success independently.

His album ‘Blonde’ was released independently in 2016, ignoring traditional record label legislation.

Instead, he used social media to promote his music and reach a large audience by connecting directly with them.

Ocean’s achievements demonstrate that musicians can find great success by promoting their music through their own channels.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is an interesting case because she is not independent like Frank Ocean, who built his career after cutting ties with his record label later.

However, some people consider her independent in a broader sense because of the amount of control she has over her music, business decisions, and ownership.

Taylor began her career signed to Big Machine Records and is currently signed with Republic Records, which is a division of Universal Music Group.

This allows her access to radio promotion and global marketing campaigns and major-label funding.

Even though she isn't an independent artist, Taylor Swift's fight to own her own music has made her a major figure in artists' rights advocacy.

Chance The Rapper

The Chicago-born artist built his career without signing away his rights or creative control to any major label. Yet, he has become one of the most successful artists in modern hip-hop.

He released mixtapes such as ‘Colouring Book’ independently, using streaming platforms and social media to connect directly with his fans.

Chance demonstrated that independent artists can still achieve mainstream recognition while maintaining control over their careers.
